5 Ways To Keep Your Jewelry In Great Shape

Posted on: 12 October 2015

Well-maintained jewelry, whether it's a necklace or bracelet, can enhance your outfits, make you stand out in a crowd, and fetch you a better price during a jewelry appraisal. However, jewelry can easily get tangled and dirty if it is not cared for properly. Taking a few extra minutes to care for your jewelry can help it last longer. Here are five ways to keep your jewelry in great shape:

Remove Jewelry Before Cleaning

Are you planning on cleaning the house? If so, don't forget to remove all jewelry pieces lying around beforehand. The harsh chemicals from cleaning supplies can destroy your beautiful gems by discoloring them.

Keep it Clean

Just like anything else, it is important to keep your jewelry clean. Washing it at least a couple times a week or so will help it look shiny and new. For example, Good Housekeeping Magazine recommends putting a few drops of mild dish soap in a bowl of warm water and cleaning your silver jewelry with it. Just dip a soft rag in the water and gently rub your jewelry with it. Then, pat it with a dry rag until it dries completely. If your pearls are looking a bit dull, lay them on a soft cloth. Then, put a small makeup brush in a bowl of warm water and shampoo. Gently rub each pearl with the makeup brush. Do not forget to rinse the pearls with a damp cloth.

Don't Wear the Same Jewelry Every Day

Even if you think a piece of jewelry is exceptionally beautiful, you should not wear it every day. Wearing the same jewelry each day can make it fade faster and increase the risk of damage. After you are done wearing a jewelry piece for the day, put it in a jewelry box to keep it safe.

Take Jewelry Off Before Swimming

If you plan on swimming, you should take off all your jewelry first. Both chlorine and salt water are very abrasive and can cause wear and tear on your beautiful gems.

Have a Professional Check Your Jewelry

It is a good idea to have a professional at a jewelry store inspect your jewelry for wear and tear periodically. He or she will check for loose stones and make sure there are no weakened prongs. A professional jeweler will also give your jewelry a thorough cleaning and polish, helping it look beautiful and new.

If you follow these helpful tips, your jewelry will look gorgeous for a long time.
